CO2 Tax Threatens US Economy
The Senate is expected to debate a proposed bill that would impose an estimated 6 trillion dollar tax on Americans. The strain placed on Americans could mortally wound the economy.
If passed, the Lieberman-Warner climate change bill would seemingly turn the environment into a stock market. Businesses and individuals would be alotted only a certain amount of CO2 emissions. If they want to release more, they would have to buy or trade others' CO2 "stocks."
Proceeds from the tax would mainly go to promote low carbon emission fuels and other alternate fuel technology. Money would also be provided to help people struggling to pay high energy bills.
The bill offers a great opportunity to help the environment, but the costs may be more than the benefits. A tax so large would cripple lower and middle class Americans. Sure Americans would have to change their lifestyle: never leave the house, never heat the house, never use electricity, ect.
A mandate to change the environment sounds good in theory, but in reality a bill such as this might cause more harm than benefit.
