Quick and Easy Gas Saving Tips
Just a few tips and tricks that you can do to increase fuel efficiency and save money.
Universal Tips
- Always drive conservatively. Try to take of slowly and avoid sudden braking. Both put a heavy strain on the engine, and you're going to get to your speed anyway; what's a few more seconds?
- Take extra weight out of your car. If you have a heavy toolbox in the trunk that you never use, take it out; you'll notice a difference.
- Avoid idiling for long periods of time. If you are stopped for a train or because of a wreck, turn the engine off.
- Use cruise control if possible. The car can control the speed much more smoothly than you can.
- Drive the speed limit. Driving fast might be fun, but it burns much more gas than needed.
- If driving a manual, try to get to the highest gear as soon as possible. The engine will run a much lower RPM, saving a considerable amount of gas.
- Keep your tires filled to the maximum pressure.
- Plan out an efficient trip (especially if taking a longer trip). You want to find the straightest route with the least number of stops.
- Make sure air, fuel, and oil filters are clean.
- Regularly change your oil and have your car tuned up.
- Combine trips and errands. If you know you have to go to the store, do it on your way home from work.
- But gas in the middle of the week. Many times, gas stations raise their prices on the weekends, expecting heavier traffic.
- Watch the news and find the lowest gas prices in town, theres usually certain stations that are cheaper than others.
- Don't bother filling up with premium gas unless your car's owner's manual specifically states that your car needs it. Regular gas will give you just as good milleage a premium gas will.
Summer tips
- Fill your car up in the morning, and pump the gas at the slowest speed. Why?
- When the weather is nice, walk or ride a bike. You get to enjoy the nice weather and save gas!
Winter Tips
- Don't spend time warming up your car. The amount of gas lost in idiling is much greater than the amount saved by running with a warm engine.
- If theres snow or ice piled on your car, brush it off. The snow and ice add weight and increase drag, which damage fuel efficiency.
